Amount of sugar in soft drinks

Due to the incredible increase that occurs each year in cases of both obesity and overweight, health authorities are increasingly concerned with limiting the content of certain substances, ingredients and compounds in some of the most consumed foods .

In our country, for example, a few years ago the Ministry of Health prohibited the sale of vending machines for industrial pastries and sugary drinks in schools and institutes, recommending that they have mostly fresh fruit and healthier foods (such as sandwiches with sausages) low in fat).

The truth is that the added sugar We can find it in a good number of products that we eat every day: the cereals that we have for breakfast, the juice that we drink at mid-morning ... and, of course, the piece of cake or sponge cake that we eat.

In the case of refreshments, the main health authorities and health administrations of many countries have warned about the high content of sugars in this type of drinks. What undoubtedly favors the excess of weight, especially when the consumption is between moderate to excessive, and joins the little or null practice of physical activity.

The sugar that we can find in soft drinks

Amount of sugar in a canned soft drink

The amount of sugar that we indicate below is for 330 milliliters of product, the equivalent of a can of soda:

  • Cola drink: 35 grams of sugar
  • Lemon refresher: 42 grams of sugar
  • Isotonic drink: 26 grams of sugar

Taking into account that in a diet of an adult person of 2,000 Kcal should not exceed 30 to 50 grams of sugar per day (which would mean on average to about 6 teaspoons of sugar), simply taking a can of some of the sodas indicated previously, we would almost be surpassing this amount. And, obviously, without including other products and foods with sugar that we would consume during the rest of the day.

Amount of sugar in a small bottle

In a 600-milliliter soft drink (the usual little bottles that were sold just a few years ago and that we can find today in all supermarkets), the amount of sugar is:

  • Cola drink: 63 grams of sugar
  • Refresco de limón 78 grams of sugar
  • Isotonic drink: 52 grams of sugar

In relation to cola, 63 grams of sugar is equivalent to having consumed more than 12 teaspoons of 5 grams of sugar each with our coffee. And you probably do not consume this amount of sugar with your daily coffee, right?

In the case of our partner Minue, from Direct to the Palate, they recommend the parents to make a test that would surely alarm them: fill a glass with any of the amounts of sugar indicated above, and ask themselves if they would let their children consume that amount of sugar , or if they would even put it in their coffee or tea.
