It is a blue pill, which can be easily found in the pharmacy and whose purchase, in fact, does not require to be performed under the proper medical prescription. Although its active principle is naproxen, you probably know it under your brand: Antalgin.

It basically consists of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory(NSAID), so it is part of a large group of medications commonly used and medically for the treatment of inflammation, pain and fever. In fact, within these, the most popular active ingredients are undoubtedly the most ibuprofen and the acetylsalicylic acid.

What is Antalgin and what is it for?

It is a medicine known precisely under this name, but whose active principle is the naproxen (specifically, naproxen sodium). Precisely, to contain naproxen in the form of salt tends to be absorbed more quickly than other formulations that contain only naproxen (as is the case of Naprosyn), hence when consumed the affected person feels a quick relief to their symptoms.

Specific Antalgin contains 550 mg. of naproxen sodium. Therefore, it belongs to the same group of medicines, including ibuprofen or acetylsalicylic acid, as it is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory(NSAID).

When to take it? For what ailments is indicated

Like any other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, Antalgin is useful to lower inflammation, relieve pain and reduce fever. Therefore, this medication is usually taken for the following indications and conditions:

  • Treatment of mild to moderate pain, especially when it occurs with inflammation.
  • Symptomatic relief of primary dysmenorrhea (pains associated with menstruation). In addition, it is useful in case of primary and secondary menorrhagia.
  • Symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and acute episodes of gout.
  • Symptomatic treatment of acute migraine attacks.

How to take it and at what dose? How many hours

We must bear in mind that, unlike other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, in the case of Antalgin, its dosage is somewhat different. In fact, the daily dose ranges between 550 mg and 1100 mg, although when starting treatment, it is advisable to start the dose with 550 mg and then reduce it to 275 mg every 6-8 hours.

However, depending on the type of pathology or condition, the recommended posology is different. Take note:

  • Migraine crisis:A first dose of 825 mg is recommended at the beginning of the symptoms, followed by 275 mg after half an hour.
  • Menstruation pain:A first dose of 550 mg is recommended, followed by 275 mg every 6-8 hours.
  • Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis:A first dose of 550 mg twice a day (morning and night) is advised.

Main contraindications

Like any other medicine, and particularly as with any other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, we must pay attention to the contraindications of Antalgin, to know whether or not we can take it safely.

In this sense, its consumption is not advised in case of:

  • Allergic reactions and allergies to acetylsalicylic acid or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
