The casadielles are typical sweets of the region of Asturias and traditional Carnival Parties and also Christmas. As with other sweets, casadielles are now made and tasted at any time of the year.

What are casadielles?

It is probably the most famous and popular sweet of Asturias. The casadielles consist of a kind of dough, canutillo or sweet empanadilla that is filled with walnut, anise and sugar. They are made with broken dough or puff pastry dough. The way to cook them can be either baked or fried and this will depend on the type of dough that we should use.

If we want to cook the casadielles in the oven, we should make them with puff pastry, in case we want to make the casadielles fried we would need a broken dough.

Both a type of dough and another can be made with homemade recipe or resort to the industrial mass that is already prepared. Everything will depend on our taste and on the time available.

The casadielles inside contain a filling that makes them very appetizing, a sweet paste of ground nuts that is made with nuts, sugar and a little bit of anise.

There are recipes for casadielles in which they substitute walnuts for ground hazelnuts, anise for wine, and instead of sugar they use honey.

The shape that is given to the dough to form the casadielles, is a cylindrical shape like a tube or tube and then filled with walnut paste.

Once stuffed they are closed on the sides pressing the fork as we do with the dumplings so that the filling does not come out while the candy is cooking. Then they are sprinkled with luster sugar.
