Differences between gazpacho and salmorejo, two delicious cold dishes

If you were wondering about two quintessential Spanish dishes that you tend to enjoy especially in the hottest months (mainly in summer) for its great refreshing power it's quite likely that two come to mind: the Gazpacho and the gazpacho. They consist of two delicious cold soups that in addition to being extremely refreshing and moisturizing inside contain a very large amount of vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients.

Both are mainly characterized by being two delicious and very nutritious dishes made with olive oil, bread and raw vegetables. The preparation of these two wonderful soups is actually very simple and easy, but at the time of preparing them it is true that they can pose some doubts directly related to their differences, since both appearance and color often resemble a lot.

The reason why the tonality of these two traditional dishes is quite similar (which can lead to confusion on many occasions), is because in both recipes tomato is used as the main ingredient, in addition to other vegetables that will depend on whether we are going to prepare one or the other. That is to say, both gazpacho and salmorejo have tomato as the main protagonist.

However, although salmorejo uses tomato as the main vegetable using it almost exclusively, in the preparation of gazpacho, other raw vegetables such as peppers and cucumbers are also added.

But to avoid messes, a useful option is to know the main characteristics of both dishes to discover their basic differences.

The main characteristics of gazpacho and salmorejo

Before knowing the differences of each dish we can establish a basic line from which to discover them: both gazpacho and salmorejo use tomato as the main ingredient. Once we have this clear particularity we can know its most important distinctions.

  • In the case of gazpacho: In its preparation, ripe tomato, cucumber, green pepper, red pepper, hard bread, a little garlic, onion, olive oil, vinegar, water, salt and pepper are used.
  • In the case of salmorejo: Although mature tomato is also used, it is usual for salmorejo to have more garlic, as well as being used in the preparation of hard bread, olive oil and salt.

As we see, while in the gazpacho tomato and other vegetables are used as main ingredients fresh, as in the case of cucumber or pepper, in the case of salmorejo only tomato and Garlic, in addition to olive oil and hard bread.

However, in addition to the tomato also have a common feature, and is that both dishes are served cold. Hence its incredible qualities to refresh us in the hottest days of the year.
