How to make dandelion coffee

Within the different and different coffee substitutes that can become excellent alternatives of this one we are, above all, with more known or popular options for its traditional use, as it is the case of the chicory, a plant whose leaves are used like any other vegetable or in salads, and whose root is dried, roasted and ground for the production of natural coffee (or, rather, as a substitute for coffee).

We can also find other options equally interesting, but less known. This is the case of the use of dandelion root As a substitute for coffee, which is also dried and roasted in the oven, it is milled with the help of a coffee grinder and infused with hot water, being able to follow -even- the same steps you follow when making your coffee in the coffee maker.

Ingredients for making dandelion coffee

  • 1 handful of dandelion roots
  • 1 cup of water
  • Water (to clean the roots)

What do you need?

In addition to the ingredients that we have indicated in the previous section, you also need:

  • 1 coffee grinder
  • 1 saucepan
  • 1 spoon
  • 2 cups
  • 1 colander
  • 1 baking tray

Steps to make dandelion coffee

  1. Remove the plant from the root.
  2. Clean the roots well. To do this, put them in a bowl or saucepan and cover them with water, repeating several times and then leaving them to soak for a few hours.
  3. Once several hours have passed, rinse them again several times (in this way you will eliminate the earth that could have remained).

  4. Separate the roots, eliminating those that are damaged or not in optimal conditions.
  5. With the help of a knife cut the roots along.
  6. Place the roots in a baking tray, and put them to dry at a temperature of 100 ° C for 5 hours.
  7. Once dry and toast place them in the coffee grinder and grind several times until you get a fine powder.
  8. Put 1 or 2 teaspoons of this fine powder in a new saucepan, and put the equivalent to a cup of water, bringing it to a boil.
  9. When it begins to boil, reduce heat and simmer over low heat for 5 to 10 minutes.
  10. Mix well with a spoon, and finally strain and serve in a cup.

If you wish, you can sweeten it with honey or with whole cane sugar, as well as accompany it with milk in the same way that you would drink a delicious café con leche (but this time with dandelion root coffee).
