Jocote: benefits and properties

The jocote (or xocote) is a generally small fruit (only 2 or 3 centimeters in diameter), which has a rounded shape and sometimes elongated.

Its flavor depends on the moment it is consumed, so that when it is somewhat greener, its flavor tends to be acidic, and when it is more ripe it is extremely sweet.

At present we can find two distinct varieties, especially for the time, period or maturation period:

  • Yellow jocote: mature in winter. Its fruit is green after its birth and then turns yellow during the maturation process. It is usual to eat it with salt, or cooked.
  • Red Jocote: mature in summer. It varies from green to yellow, finally reaching that characteristic red color. It is common to eat them green with a pinch of salt or ripe, being very sweet. It is used as an ingredient for drinks and to make a sweet that is prepared especially in Holy Week baptized with the name of "Almíbar".

Benefits of jocote

It is a fruit low in fats and proteins, and it stands out for its high content of water, minerals (calcium, iron and phosphorus) and vitamins (especially vitamin C).

Its consumption is usual in case of chronic diarrhea and for the treatment of inflammations. It is also diuretic, helping to eliminate toxins that accumulate in our body and to prevent fluid retention.

It also exerts an antispasmodic effect, and its consumption is also usual to lower high fever.

Its leaves can be used in the treatment of skin problems, such as rashes, wounds, inflammations or burns.
