The gofio is ideal for the heart and your cardiovascular health

If you live in the Canary Islands it is obvious that you already know what is the gofio and that you have already tried it at some other time. If so, it is also quite likely that each morning you have a few tablespoons of gofio with your usual coffee with milk. But if not, perhaps when discovering the results obtained in a scientific study carried out by the University Hospital of the Canary Islands (HUC), you can consider this possibility. But let's go in parts.

Gofio is the popular name that receives toasted flour in the Canary Islands. That is, we have a wonderful food consisting of a flour of different cereals not sifted, usually millet or wheat, thus becoming a delicious mixture of roasted beans and ground to stone.

In the Canarian Archipelago, for example, it is common to consume it with milk, in certain dishes (for example in stews, pur├ęs and broths) or it is also widely used in the preparation of desserts.

It stands out without doubt for being a totally natural food, in whose elaboration only natural techniques are used as for example is the case of the elaboration to the stone, not containing preservatives nor colorants.

It is more, from a nutritional point of view, surprising for its high content of vitamins, among which we can mention B vitamins (such as B1, B2 and B3), vitamin A, C and D. contributes minerals, as is the case of iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium, sodium and zinc, in addition to amino acids and omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids.

The research on which we spoke at the beginning of this note was carried out between 2007 and 2014 and its results have been recently known. The study was conducted with data collected in a thousand patients between 70 and 80 years who presented symptoms of chest pain to which an effort test was requested.

At that time the research work began in order to study whether the consumption of gofio exerted an influence on the exercise capacity, as well as on the risk of presenting coronary artery disease.

With all this the study revealed that Older people who consumed gofio regularly for at least 40 years had a better functional capacity, a lower risk of coronary artery disease and a greater proportion in overcoming stress tests.

According to the results obtained with the study, published in the magazine, the consumption maintained of gofio is very beneficial for our health, given that its prolonged intake helps reduce cardiovascular risk.

As specialists remember, in the 21st century cardiovascular disease continues to be the most frequent cause of mortality, adding in turn that maintaining an adequate physical wellbeing and following a healthy diet based on cereals is fundamental for its prevention.
