Vaccine against Ebola

The Ebola is a viral infectious disease, which belongs to the family Filoviridae of the genre Filovirus. That is, it is a virus with the shape of a filament, which has the ability to grab onto the outside of some human cells to penetrate its interior. Once inside it reproduces quickly. Therefore, it is a virus that attacks other cells and, in turn, creates new viruses, so that the infection spreads throughout the body.

It is a virus that owes its name to one of the areas where the first of the outbreaks was recorded, in the Ebola River (Democratic Republic of the Congo, former Zaire), back in 1976. In this year there was another outbreak Simultaneously, one in Yambuku (near the mentioned river) and another one in Nzara (Sudan).

Despite the fact that cases are registered every year, it has been the result of the last outbreak (which started at the end of last year 2013) when Ebola has come to light, not only because of the large volume of registered cases (both infected as of deceased, which has turned it into one of the deadliest outbreaks to date), but because there have already been cases in other countries outside Africa, including Spain.

As we mentioned in the article dedicated to Ebola cure, so far there is no effective cure for Ebola. In fact, the only existing medical treatment is a supportive treatment, which seeks to 'help' the infected patient to continue living until their immune system is able to fight the virus on their own.

On the other hand, So far there is no vaccine against Ebola, that allows an effective protection against a possible contagion or infection. They only exist experimental treatments which have been used in some of the infected patients, which are antibodies that have been created in animals infected with Ebola, and extracted from them for use in humans. However, they have not been 100% effective because while some patients have survived, others have died.
