Why we must recycle expired medicines

According to the statistics, Spain is one of the main European countries in terms of drug consumption, which is why you should know what to do with those expired medications that we have in our health pantry or in our medicine cabinet.

Should they be thrown away? Should they be recycled? And if that is the case, where do we have to take them?

Experts indicate that the daily and simple gesture of throwing something into the garbage can (and even by the toilet itself) can become a dangerous and irresponsible act.

The main reason is that the medicines (whether expired or not), as well as used syringes or x-rays are polluting products that can damage health.

The importance of recycling expired medicines

For all the above, know how to get rid of expired medications as well as this type of products is a more than recommended action.

There is no doubt that the best way is to use the baptized as Sigre Points, which tend to be containers distributed in many pharmacies in our country.

Once we have deposited the expired medicines, they are collected and taken to a classification and selection plant, where many of them are incinerated to obtain energy that can then be used as electricity.

What to do with expired medicines and other products?

Of course, it must be taken into account that it must be clear what products we can deposit in those containers:

  • Medications and drugs expired.
  • Empty containers.
  • Containers with drug residues.
  • Boxes and leaflets of medicines.
  • Drugs that have not expired but that we no longer use.

What products should we not take to the pharmacy?

  • Batteries
  • Cottons and gauze used.
  • Thermometers
  • Syringes, prostheses and x-rays used.
  • Glasses.
