Salmonella and salmonellosis: differences

Usually it is very common that both terms are confused, so that for a person both salmonella and salmonellosis would come to indicate the same thing, when although both are obviously related, the reality is that they are terms that we must know their differentiation.

It is common that many people mistakenly refer to the disease as salmonella, when in reality salmonella is only the bacterium that causes gastrointestinal infection, which is finally known as salmonellosis.

That is, the main difference we find between one and another term, although both are related, the truth is that salmonella is the genus of bacteria that cause infection.

What is salmonella?

As we indicated briefly at the beginning of this note, the salmonella it should only be understood as the genus of bacteria belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae, which cause gastrointestinal infection in the infected person or animal.

What is salmonellosis?

Although it is usually confused with the former, the reality is that salmonellosis is itself the infection caused and caused by the salmonella bacteria. It consists of a bacterial disease, which as you know for sure, affects the intestinal tract.

So, what are your differences?

Very simple: while salmonella is the group of bacteria, salmonellosis is finally the name that receives its infection. That is, it is correct to say that the person has salmonellosis, and not to refer to this disease as having salmonella.
