Spanish Database of Food Composition (BEDCA)

The Spanish Database of Food Composition (BEDCA), is a new tool of the Ministry of Science and Innovation that allows any citizen to identify specific sources of nutrients, perform various analyzes of individual diets, and even design special diets for patients, among other aspects.

This brand new database, which is completely free to access and use, contains information on more than 500 foods, although it is expected that by the end of the year, it will reach a thousand.

What is the Spanish Database of Food Composition?

As its name suggests, the Spanish Database of Food Composition (or BEDCA), is a totally free tool that has had the funding and coordination of the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN), which allows citizens who wish to know the composition of food, and even perform diet analysis individual or even design special diets.

In particular, the citizen can consult up to a total of 39 different data per food, knowing for example the caloric content of it, or its main nutrients.

What can be consulted in the Spanish Database of Food Composition?

Basically, you can check the composition of the food that has already been added to the database (at the moment, more than 500 foods).

But you can also perform analyzes of individual diets, or design diets for healthy people with special needs.

Among the food groups that can be consulted, we find the following: dairy products and derivatives; eggs and derivatives; meat and derivatives; fish, molluscs, crustaceans and derivatives; oils and fats; non-dairy beverages; cereals; seeds and nuts; vegetables; fruits and vegetables and sugar.
