Why it's not good to drink coffee fasting

It is probably one of the most common habits or routines in many houses in our country: we wake up, we wash our faces in order to get better, and we quickly go to the kitchen to prepare a well-loaded coffee. So every morning, every day, including weekends and holidays (even obviously although we do not have to go to work or study). That is to say, we tend to drink coffee fasting, before having eaten something else. We can mention at this point the benefits of drinking coffee only and without sugar: it is an antioxidant drink, it helps us to reduce drowsiness, it stimulates us and it is also an excellent digestive.

However, as we already knew in an earlier note in which we answered the question precisely why it is not good to drink coffee after waking up, in reality it is not very appropriate to drink coffee when we wake up, because between 8 and 9 o'clock In the morning we find higher levels of cortisol in our body, a hormone that is directly related to alertness. In fact, the best way to reduce drowsiness and activate us is actually drinking coffee between 9:30 and 11:30 in the morning and after eating at 13:00 noon.

Deepening a little more in our most common habits, the truth is that to drink coffee on an empty stomach is a complete mistake, not being a very healthy routine.

We must bear in mind that, during the night while we rest and sleep, we maintain a prolonged fast that tends to last between 6 to 8 hours on average. In this sense, it is always recommended that the food or drinks that we consume as the first food of the day are not irritating to the stomach mucosa.

Taking into account that coffee is an irritating drink, actually we are facing a drink not recommended for breakfast if we have not eaten anything before, since we would only irritate the stomach lining and increase stomach acidity. In fact, it is known that those who drink coffee on an empty stomach and only opt for this drink and not eat anything else, often suffer from gastritis in the long term.

Therefore, the recommendation is more than obvious: if you are looking for the stimulating effects of coffee, it is best to move your consumption until after 9:30 in the morning. Or, if you do not want to change your routine and want to continue enjoying your cup of coffee at breakfast, try at least to eat something before (for example, a toast with tomato and olive oil, some cookies, a piece of bread with jam of fruits…).
