What are analgesics?

If I asked you right now it is quite likely that, in the pantry of your bathroom or kitchen you have a very great diversity of medicines that you have needed over the years, when for example you got sick from the flu, from a cold, because your head simply hurt or you just had muscular discomfort.

We can mention on this occasion the home first aid kit that would include a series of medicines and drugs that will be useful at certain times, and that precisely its consumption does not require a prescription. Although in other cases, yes, and we are in this sense with the problem of self-medication.

For this fundamental reason, you should always bear in mind that before taking a medication it is essential that it has been prescribed by your doctor. It is also advisable to check this home medicine kit at least once a year, given that it is essential recycle expired medications. With regard to the different medicines and basic drugs that we all have at home, we probably find ourselves with the analgesics. And what are the best known? Without a doubt, both paracetamol wave aspirin.

A analgesic (or analgesic drug) is a drug whose main function is that of soothe, relieve, reduce or eliminate pain. With regard to its basic uses, it helps to reduce or alleviate headaches, muscular discomfort, those pains of arthritic origin and other pains or related attacks.

There are different types of analgesics, among which we can highlight the following:

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories: they act by inhibiting crucial enzymes in the production of prostaglandins, pain mediators. The best known is aspirin.
  • Major opiatesThey can be natural (opioid) or artificial (opioid), which act on the opioid receptors of neurons of the nervous system, mimicking the analgesic effect of endogenous opioids. From a therapeutic point of view, the dose can be increased according to the presence of pain and the patient's own tolerance.
  • Adjuvant drugs: Corticosteroids stand out in this group. They potentiate the action of any other analgesic in association, but they are not analgesic in themselves when administered in isolation.

There are also certain natural analgesics that we find at all times in Nature, and that consist of medicinal plants with analgesic action, helping to calm and reduce pain. Particularly noteworthy are the harpagophyta, the hypericum, the mint and the valerian. In most cases, the way to take these medicinal plants to help soothe the pain is in the form of decoction or infusion.
